The Belleville Public Library, an historic Carnegie institution, serves patrons in two locations within the city.  We seek a dynamic, experienced leader to serve as Library Director.  The Director will continue to develop the collection while implementing expansion of information technology, electronic books, media and services for our 21st Century patrons.


The Library Director has a high level of responsibility and accountability.  He/she will administer library services in compliance with all applicable laws, policies and decisions of the Board of Trustees and will manage a staff of 29 bargaining unit municipal employees, insuring their compliance with job requirements and professional standards.


The Director prepares, implements and monitors the library’s annual budget; provides monthly reports and budget updates to the Library Board of Trustees; attends regular meetings of the Board of Trustees and Belleville City Council; maintains financial and statistical records; approves all requests for equipment and services.


Belleville is a diverse, vibrant community in Southern Illinois.  The Director will be expected to support cultural, educational, professional and recreational needs by continuous development of relevant and appropriate materials, programs and services for patrons of all ages.  The successful candidate will possess considerable ability in dealing with the public and represent the library as a public relations liaison at local, state and professional functions.


Qualifications: Requires a graduate degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university and a minimum of five years management experience in a Public Library setting.  All candidates should have experience in financial planning as well as superior technical writing and grant writing skills, considerable knowledge of personnel law, professional library principles, materials and practices.  This person must have the courage of his/her convictions; possess and utilize strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills while overseeing daily operations and building management; must be an excellent communicator; and be able to deal with staff, patrons and the public with a high level of authoritative diplomacy.


Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The Library offers a generous benefits package to include retirement, healthcare, vacation, personal and sick leave.  The selected Library Director will be required to reside within the city limits of Belleville, Illinois.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applications for a Senior Special Collections Conservator. Reporting to the Head of Conservation, the Senior Special Collections Conservator will be responsible for the item-level conservation treatment of rare and unique library materials, as well as keeping written records and photo-documentation of such work. This position will provide conservation support for special collections materials in close consultation with collection managers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Treatment-50%: Provide conservation treatment of rare and unique paper-based library materials, both single-item and collection-based treatments, as well as keeping written and photographic documentation of such work. Treatment will also include exhibition preparation, condition assessment for a variety of digitization and other projects, and disaster recovery and response.
  • Consultation and project planning-20%: Provide conservation support to locations holding rare book and paper-based special collections materials in close consultation with collection managers and other Library units, as applicable. Includes, but is not limited to, identifying treatments, arranging workflow, and aiding in the development of care and handling guidelines for special collections materials.
  • Supervisory-10%: As budgets allow, staff at various levels will report directly to the Senior Special Collections Conservator to support the initiatives of the Conservation Unit. Staff supervision may include, but is not limited to, graduate assistants, graduate hourly, graduate practicum, undergraduate hourly, and volunteers.
  • Outreach and service-10%: The incumbent will allot a portion of his or her weekly time to performing outreach to the Library, campus, state, and Midwest region. In addition, the incumbent is encouraged to serve in leadership positions in professional organizations. The incumbent will also develop and organize a biennial colloquium, suite of workshops, conference, or any combination thereof pertaining to an issue of direct relevance to the conservation community as a whole or to conservation of the collections of the University Library in particular.
  • Research-10%: The incumbent will pursue analytical research on topics of interest that apply to conservation treatment of books and paper documents, conservation management, or book history, in collaboration with research scientists within the University of Illinois scientific community and beyond. Research topics will be approved by the Head of Conservation and pursuits will be supported by the unit and Library. In addition, every effort will be made to share the results of this research with as broad an audience as possible.

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree. Minimum of three years of professional conservation experience. Extensive knowledge of book and/or paper conservation principles and practices and of the physical and chemical nature of books and paper, as evidenced by (i) a graduate degree in conservation, or (ii) the completion of a conservation apprenticeship with an established conservator, or (iii) other verifiable certification of advanced training and education. Excellent communication skills. Preferred: Experience working collaboratively in a research library; undergraduate or graduate degree or significant coursework in a related field such as history, art history, library science, museum studies, chemistry or studio art; and demonstrated experience in dealing with the intellectual issues involved in the use of research library collections; grant writing or fund-raising experience; experience in professional writing; experience in research methodologies related to conservation; experience in professional outreach and/or service; experience organizing educational or public events; experience of training others.

Digital Humanities Specialist – UIUC Library

Duties and Responsibilities:  The University of Illinois Library conducts a variety of activities in support of digital humanities scholarship, including creation, delivery, curation and preservation of a wide variety of types of digital assets and tools.  Reporting to the Technical Architect for Repositories and Scholarly Communication, the Digital Humanities Specialist will assist with the planning, implementation and ongoing production of these digital collections and scholarly initiatives, with particular emphasis on project design, digitization workflows, and content and delivery systems.  The successful candidate will work across a number of humanities and Special Collections units and will be part of a team of IT personnel that develops and delivers repository and scholarly communication services.  Examples of ongoing projects include a robust newspaper digitization program and a “triple-decker” nineteenth-century American novel digital conversion project, utilizing content management systems such as Olive, Archon, CONTENTdm, and locally developed databases.  In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the work of the Scholarly Commons in helping to articulate the relationship between new technologies and humanities scholarship to the community of humanists; in advising teaching faculty on the creation of digital objects and providing technical support for use of analytical tools; and in serving as an agent between content providers and the Library’s repository.  This position is expected to evolve in tandem with the Library’s strategic goals and to experiment with new ways of supporting and enhancing the teaching, research and service missions of the University.  The scope and responsibilities will shift in accordance with priorities established by the AUL for Information Technology Planning and Policy in consultation with IT staff and digital humanities stakeholders.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Director of Technical Services (TS) is responsible for managing all units of the department including Acquisitions, Cataloging/Metadata, Bindery and Processing, Digitization Lab and Electronic Resources management. The Director reports to the Dean of Library and Information Services, and works with LIS faculty and staff to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the Technical Services operation. As an information professional in a tenure-track faculty position, regular contributions in scholarship, research and other creative activities in library and information science, or other related academic field is required. A high level of proficiency in librarianship including the use of relevant technology and best practices in bibliographic access and control of print and digital formats is expected from the successful candidate.

PRIMARY DUTIES: Plans long and short term projects and operations for Technical Services including, but not limited to, the incorporation of new library systems in the department. Managers all Technical Services personnel. Oversees annual evaluation of work performance and development plans for all department faculty and civil service staff. Develops policies and procedures for Technical Services. Monitors, assesses and evaluates their implementation and effectiveness. Participates in overall LIS planning, consultation, and management activities. Works with the Dean and other LIS faculty to assign resources for technical operations and projects. Manages the budget for the department. Apprises and advises other Library personnel on all department policies and procedural changes. Represents the Library in state and national organizations, as appropriate. Remains current with library trends, issues, and practices, participates in continuing educational opportunities and apprises colleagues of developments.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Assistant or Associate Professor, 12-month, tenure-track, continuing, 100%. Contract available May 1, 2011.


SALARY RANGE: Negotiable dependent upon credentials and experience, with a minimum salary of $58,500 annually. Excellent fringe benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school. Minimum of three years of progressively responsible and successful management experience in an academic library. Two years of experience in one or more of the following areas: acquisitions, bibliographic control, electronic resource and serials management. Demonstrated knowledge of MARC21 formats and bibliographic utilities such as OCLC. Demonstrated knowledge of current standards, best practices and emerging trends in technical services and library technologies. Demonstrated understanding of academic teaching and research needs.
